A Chocolate Spirit is the true story of a 35-year cross- cultural friendship that will warm your heart, make you laugh and bring tears to your eyes. It is the story of Jennie, a naïve small-town white woman, and Rosemary, a streetwise, Chicago-born black woman who meet and develop a friendship that takes the author on a journey toward racial understanding.

The friendship between the two women begins like most other friendships. They spend time together, have fun, and get to know each other. But one day their friendship goes down a totally different road when Rosemary brings up the subject of race.

In A Chocolate Spirit, Jennie describes her growing pains as she learns through this friendship about the realities of racism in America. She reveals her mistakes, her lack of understanding and her vulnerabilities. With Rosemary as friend and mentor, Jennie learns a new way of living, healing, and standing up for what is important.”
